In England (and Australia) its pronounced Zed, not Zee or 'Zeb'

In England (and Australia) its pronounced Zed, not Zee or 'Zeb'
But why? Is it because of bad phone reception or the accent?
There isnt any other letters in the alphabet pronounced in such a manner or any differently other than Z...
Is it a nationalism thing? Do people feel proud when they pronounce it in such a manner?
